During Steve’s 30 years in the automotive industry, he has taken a number of contemporary ideas from concept to high-volume production. Innovation has been a central theme in his career, with 47 patents granted in the U.S.
Engine Systems Innovation (ESI-Inc), is an automotive-focused consulting firm founded by Steve Arnold. Several of Steve’s ground-breaking historical products are the LST ultra-high boost turbo; the AVNT used in the Navistar V8, I6, and Powerstroke engines, and the Duramax engine; the Dual Boost turbo used in the Ford Powerstroke (Scorpion) engine.
Through ESI, Steve has provided consulting to firms around the world and has developed engine and turbocharger technology for licensing including the Continuously Variable Displacement Engine, the Variable Volute Turbine, and the PureFlow™ Compressor.
After founding ESI, Steve found it necessary to expand his analysis capabilities to develop the engine and turbo advanced technologies. He is now proficient at 3D modeling, multi-body dynamics, finite element analysis, computational fluid dynamics and rotordynamics.
Steve has published numerous papers with 3 being selected to the SAE’s “Journal of Engines”. He received the SAE International “Cliff Garrett Award” in 2004 and was elected as an “SAE Fellow” in 2005. His Dual Boost Turbo won the 2011 Automotive News PACE Award for engine technology innovation and another for green engine technology. Steve received Honeywell’s “Senior Leadership Award” in 2003 and was the first recipient of Honeywell’s “Excellence in Innovation” in 2006. His Continuously Variable Displacement (CVD) engine concept won the NASA Tech Brief/SAE International “Create the Future” contest for Automotive/Transportation technology in 2014. Steve was also an Associate Editor of the SAE Journal.
